LEWISBURG, Pa. - It appeared as though the Bucknell men's soccer team was going to knock off another nationally ranked opponent, but the Bison ended up playing to a 1-1 tie with No. 24 Colgate Saturday afternoon at Varsity Soccer Field. Bucknell, which defeated a pair of ranked foes last year, and upset then-No. 2 Maryland in 2003, jumped on top in the first minute, but the Raiders tied the score with just 8:02 left to play in regulation.
Justin Wolf (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) netted just the second goal this season against the potent Raider defense in the opening minute of the match. Bucknell gained possession near midfield and Nathan LaGrave (Okinawa, Japan/Kadena) quickly shuttled the ball to Alex Russo (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy). Russo lofted the ball ahead to Wolf, who snuck behind the defense. Wolf kicked a line drive into the left side of the goal past Doug Litvack.
Possessing the 1-0 lead, the Bison dominated the first half as they outshot the Raiders 7-2. Goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) was not called upon to make a single save in the first 45 minutes of play. He ended up with three saves in the contest.
The second half was a different story as Colgate was on its offensive side of the field much of the half, outshooting Bucknell 5-3 and winning the corner kick battle 7-0. The Bison defense was strong, but the Raiders finally found the back of the net with 8:02 remaining in regulation when Eric Anton headed in a goal off a pass from Charlie Lambropoulos.
On the possession prior to the game-tying goal, Colgate also almost scored. The ball got in front of the net between three Raiders. Anton attempted a shot, but a diving Kuterbach took it right off Anton's foot.
Overall, Bucknell ended up outshooting Colgate 11-8, while the Raiders had more corner kicks (9-6). David Cappuccio, who has not allowed a goal in more than 500 minutes of action this season, relieved Litvack late in the second half and made one save in goal.
Bucknell, which is now 7-2-3 overall and 2-0-1 in the Patriot League, has lost just once in its last 10 games. The Bison will remain in a tie with Colgate in the league standings. Both squads entered the weekend tied atop the standings with Lehigh, which faces American Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Colgate, one of the final unbeaten teams in the nation, is now 6-0-3 overall. The Raiders have allowed just two goals all season.
The Bison, who play five of their next six games away from Varsity Soccer Field where they have posted a 4-1-1 mark this season, are idle until traveling to Lafayette next Saturday night, Oct. 7, for another league match.
