ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell men's water polo team came up short in its attempt to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 1992 as it fell to No. 1 California by a 14-5 margin Sunday morning at the Navy Open. The Bison, who are ranked 17th nationally, were led by three goals from Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin).
Masterson, who netted three goals in each of Bucknell's two games Saturday, now has a team-high nine on the season. Randy Ang (Hillsborough, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and Sean Robinson (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) each added one goal. Robinson, a senior, has already equaled his goal total from all of last year with four this weekend. Kyle Roslyn (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) contributed a pair of assists.
Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) made four saves in goal for the Bison.
California, which improved to 4-0 this weekend, jumped out to an 8-2 halftime lead before pouring on six more goals in the third quarter to take a commanding 14-2 advantage into the final period. It was the second consecutive year Bucknell has played the top-ranked team in the nation. Last year the Bison lost to then-No. 1 UCLA.
Bucknell wraps up play at the Navy Open later this morning against MIT. The game is slated for 11:30 a.m.
