STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Playing on what coach Kevin Jamieson described as a very tough golf course, the Bucknell women's golf team opened with a 334 at Penn State's Nittany Lion Invitational on Friday. Thick rough and hard, fast greens at the Penn State Blue Course drove up scores across the board, as Rollins took the team lead with a 314, with Penn State and Washington one back.
The Bison are in ninth place in the 14-team field, just two shots behind Boston College and four back of Ohio University.
Junior Kathryn Batchelor (Trenton, N.J./Princeton Day School) led the Bison contingent with a solid 80. Sophomore Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), playing for the first time in three weeks because of a sore back, also played very well and shot 82.
Also for Bucknell, junior Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) shot 85, senior Teri Schlang (Albany, N.Y./Stratton Mountain School) shot 87 and junior Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) carded an 89.
Caitlin Barry of Rollins took the individual lead with a first-round 3-over-par 75.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament continues on Saturday with a 1:15 shotgun start.
