LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team will look to push its winning streak to four as the Orange and Blue will take on Duquesne this Saturday, Sept. 23, on Varsity Soccer Field at 1 p.m. The Bison are currently 4-3-1 on the year and are coming off a 2-1 victory over Marist this past Wednesday, while the Dukes are 1-4-1 after defeating Saint Francis (Pa.), 2-1, in overtime on Sept. 15.
Since the teams first met in 1998, Bucknell holds a 2-1-0 series advantage against Duquesne. The Orange and Blue dropped the first match between the squads, 3-0, at the Marshall Tournament, but have won the last two meetings, posting a 1-0 shutout over the Dukes on the road in 1999 and picking up a 2-1 overtime victory at home in 2000.
This past Wednesday, senior Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) scored the game-winner and recorded an assist, helping the Bison come from behind in the second half to defeat Marist. Sophomore Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) tied the score for Bucknell against the Red Foxes with her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Dervarics currently has two assists to go along with her five tallies, for a squad-best 12 points.
Junior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and sophomore Kelly Boswell (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) follow with seven points apiece for the Orange and Blue. Gentile is the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week after notching three goals in her first two games of the season last week, including the match-winner against Saint Francis (Pa.). On Wednesday, Gentile recorded her seventh point in three games with an assist on the deciding goal by Margolis.
Boswell's seven points have come on two goals and three assists. She leads the squad in game-winning goals, as well, with two. Last Sunday in Bucknell's 4-1 victory over Robert Morris, Boswell set a new career high with four points on a goal and two assists in the contest.
Defensively, the Bison are led by senior Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) who has made all eight starts in goal for the team this season and has 43 saves, a 1.04 goals against average, a .843 save percentage and two shutouts to her credit on the year. Dry has been named the Patriot League's Goalkeeper of the Week on two occasions, as well.
Dry will be looking to hold off Jenna Farneti and the rest of the Duquesne offense. Farneti leads the squad in goals with two and points with four, while four other players have one goal apiece over the team's six matches. Virginia Bondi has played all 570 minutes in net for the Dukes and has made 30 saves. She holds a .750 save percentage and a 1.58 goals against average.
On Sept. 30, Bucknell will open Patriot League play at home against Colgate with a 7 p.m. match on Varsity Soccer Field.
