JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A goal from Alex Russo (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) in the 85th minute helped the Bucknell men's soccer team extend its unbeaten streak to seven matches as the Bison shut out St. Peter's 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field.
Bucknell's seven-game unbeaten streak is its longest since a similar hot spell in 1976. The program record is 14, which was set in 1974.
Conor O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Nathan LaGrave (Okinawa, Japan/Kadena) assisted on Russo's goal, his fourth of the season. O'Brien played the ball out to LaGrave, who one-timed it to Russo, who fired the ball past the Peacocks' goalkeeper, Matthew Lawlor.
Russo, who has tallied all four of his goals this season in the final nine minutes of regulation, equaled LaGrave for the team lead in both goals (4) and points (10). He also leads the squad in game-winning goals with two.
Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) picked up his second consecutive shutout by making three saves in goal for the Bison. He has not allowed a goal in his last 243:07, the longest stretch of his career. By picking up his third shutout of the season, Kuterbach moved into third place in the Patriot League in that category. He leads the league in saves with 42.
Despite winning for the sixth time in seven games, Bucknell (6-1-2) was outshot 9-7, including 6-3 after halftime. St. Peter's (2-4-1) also had more corner kicks, winning that battle 6-2. The Bison did not attempt a corner kick in the second half.
With Wednesday's contest marking the end of a three-match road trip, Bucknell returns home this weekend to begin a three-game homestand. The Bison host Army in their first home Patriot League contest Saturday at 7 p.m. on Varsity Soccer Field.
