Bucknell Men's Water Polo Opens Season with 17-4 Win Over Queens

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Led by three goals apiece from Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) and Johnny Stupp (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute), the Bucknell men's water polo team opened its 2006 season with a 17-4 win over Queens Saturday morning in its first game at the Navy Open.
Overall, 10 different Bison scored at least one goal in the win, which featured the most points for Bucknell since defeating the same Queens squad 21-3 in September 2004.
Masterson, who added one assist, picked up where he left off last year when he lead the team with 48 goals, while Stupp totaled four points off the bench in his first career game.
Sean Robinson (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) equaled Masterson and Stupp with a team-high four points courtesy of two goals and two assists. Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Dan Schutlz (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) also produced multiple-goal efforts.
Another key to the Bucknell win was a defense that produced 18 steals, its most since posting 19 in a win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in 2004. Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) led the team with three steals as 13 different Bison contributed to the total.
Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School) got the start in goal and played the first half. He made two saves and allowed one goal. Nick Donahue (Brooklyn, N.Y./Lawrenceville) relieved him for the second half and stopped one shot while allowing three goals in his first career game.
Bucknell, which is ranked 17th nationally, will take on No. 18 Santa Clara later this afternoon to complete its first day of competition at the Navy Open. The Bison will be aiming for their first 2-0 start since 1998.
