Buckell Field Hockey's Costopoulos Tabbed Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week

LEWISBURG, Pa. - On Monday, the Patriot League announced that seniors Callista Costopoulos (Shermans Dale, Pa./West Perry) and Emily Groendyke (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) and sophomore Kelly Hoffman (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) earned accolades after helping the Bison to a 2-1 record the past week with victories over the Siena and Longwood.
Costopoulos earned Offensive Player of the Week by scoring three goals in as many games on only seven shots. She now leads the Bison in goals scored and is tied for the team lead in points with five and 11, respectively. Costopoulos is also shooting .500 on the season.
"This is fantastic for Callista," said head coach Heather Lewis. "We, as a staff, really challenged her this spring and during pre-season to step up and be more of a 'presence' on the field. And, she is not letting anyone down with her consistency and performances."
Groendyke copped her second Goalie of the Week honor for her weekly performance. She collected 13 saves in the 2-1 loss to Towson University. The Bucknell goalie allowed two goals in three games and saved 90.5% of shots coming her way with a 0.69 goals-against-average. She also earned her first career shutout against Longwood this past Sunday.'
"Emily's performance may be a surprise to some but certainly not to myself," mentioned Lewis. "I've known all along that Emily is a talented goalkeeper and now she's having a chance to showcase her abilities. She is doing an outstanding job of leading our team defense."
Hoffman was cited as Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season. She contributed to the team defense that gave up a total of three goals on the week. Additionally, she recorded 9 interceptions and 14 positive tackles in the three games.
"Kelly performs at such a high work rate and I think her significance to our team goes unnoticed at times," replied Lewis. "She certainly controls the tempo of our game and is so active around the ball. She is a team leader in interceptions and positive tackles - both of which are a result of her work ethic."
The Bison return to action on Friday, Sept. 15, when they play Drexel. The match starts at 7 p.m. at Graham Field.
