UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Bucknell women's soccer team managed a stellar defensive effort, but was unable to score as the squad fell to No. 7 Penn State by a 1-0 margin at Jeffrey Field on Sunday evening. With the setback, the Bison dropped to 1-3-1 on the year while the Nittany Lions improved to 2-2-2.
Penn State netted the lone goal in the contest at 12:46 when Aubrey Aden-Buie scored, unassisted, off a shot from center that found the upper left corner of the net.
Bucknell went on to hold the Lions scoreless for the remainder of the contest despite being outshot, 24-3. The Orange and Blue narrowly missed tallying an equalizer as sophomore Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) hit the crossbar in the 32nd minute and senior Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) did the same less than one minute later. Dervarics registered the third Bison shot in the 77th minute, which was placed on target, but was turned aside by Penn State goalkeeper Kate Milstead for her lone save in the contest. Senior Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) made eight saves for Bucknell.
The Nittany Lions led in corner kicks, 8-1, and fouls were 8-6 against Penn State.
The Bison next travel to Loretto, Pa., for a mid-week contest against Saint Francis on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 4 p.m.
