LEWISBURG, Pa. - Amidst the ongoing construction at West Fields, the Bucknell men's soccer team opens its home slate Sunday against St. Bonaventure at 1 p.m. on Varsity Soccer Field. The match is the first in a busy week for the Bison, who will play four games in seven days, including three on their home pitch.
Bucknell enters the contest with an 0-1-1 record and is coming off a 1-0 loss at West Virginia on Tuesday, while St. Bonaventure is 0-1-0 entering this weekend. The Bonnies have a game at Akron Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
After posting nine shutouts a year ago, the Bison defense has continued its strong play again this season, allowing just a pair of goals. Junior Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) has made six saves in each game and has done a solid job replacing 2005 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Adam Edwards, who graduated last spring.
Kevin Holmes (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) has recorded the lone goal for Bucknell this season. He netted a game-tying goal late in the first half against Binghamton with Chris Hennings (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) earning the assist in his first career match.
Bucknell, which is 31-10-7 at home since the beginning of the 2000 campaign, has posted a 27-16-5 record in home openers since 1958. In last year's inaugural game at Varsity Soccer Field the Bison tied La Salle 0-0.
St. Bonaventure, on Sunday, will be playing its third of six consecutive away matches to start the season. The Bonnies will not play at home until Sept. 20. They opened their campaign last Saturday with a 2-0 loss at Colgate. St. Bonaventure will also play Holy Cross next week, making three of its first four games against Patriot League foes.
With construction continuing near Varsity Soccer Field, fans are asked to park in the lot nearest to Graham Field and walk around the north end of Graham Field. Seating for soccer games will be in the bleachers on the north end of Varsity Soccer Field.
Following Sunday's contest, Bucknell will head back on the road Wednesday for a skirmish with Saint Francis (Pa.). The Bison then host the Geisinger/Days Inn Bucknell Invitational next weekend as they welcome Campbell, Duquesne and Rider for the two-day event.
