LEWISBURG, Pa. - In rainy conditions, the Bucknell cross country squads got off to a terrific start in their 2006 campaign at the Bison Open late Friday afternoon at Bucknell's West Fields. The Bison women competed against Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Susquehanna, while the men took on the same teams with the addition of Scranton.
The men's squad took the first seven spots in the race. Leading the way for the Bison was junior Wallace Campbell (Montgomery, Al./Montgomery Academy) who came in at a time of 14 minutes 41 seconds. Eight seconds later, senior Mark Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y./Bellport) joined him at the line with a time of 14:49. Junior Andrew Corral (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) followed with a time of 14:54. Within six seconds of Corral, junior Will Holleran (San Rafael, Calif./Saint Ignatius Academy), rolled in for a time of 14:56. Seniors Derrin Pierret (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) and Sean Egan (Yorktown Hts. N.Y./Fordham Prep) tied with a time of 14:59 while sophomore Donald Sanner (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) round out the top seven with a time of 15 minutes even.
"This was the best Bison Open in the past four years for the men," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Cooler weather made for quicker times. Our men ran well for a group and makes for a great start for what we are planning to be a successful season."
For the women's squad, the Bison were led by seniors Jenny Stevens (Laceyville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) and Leanna Nastase (Beaverdale, Pa/Forest Hills) who ran times of 17:19 and 17:20, respectively. Junior Erin Cranmer-Hart (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) and finished in 14 seconds later with a time of 17:34. Not far behind her was fellow junior Christine Totten (Perkasie, Pa/Pennridge) with a time of 17:48. Rounding out the top six was sophomore Nicole Farcaro (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) who came in at a time of 17:56 and Gillian Nordquist (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) with a time of 18:07.
"I thought it was a good race," said Donner. "Our women seemed in control of the entire race. They went out easy and we finished fast which is what I like to see during the early season."
Due to the inclement weather of Tropical Storm Ernesto, Bucknell will not be competing in the Harry Lang Invitational originally scheduled for Saturday Sept. 2. The Orange and Blue will return to action Sept. 16 at the Lock Haven Invitational in Lock Haven, Pa.
