LEWISBURG, Pa. - After a stellar career at the University of Connecticut, Melissa Bostwick joins the Bucknell field hockey staff as a first year graduate assistant to coach goalkeepers. Bostwick was a two-year starter at goalkeeper for the UConn Huskies. Bostwick appeared in 45 straight games while recording 16 shutouts, 123 saves for a save percentage of 73.2% and limiting opponents to less than one goal a game (0.98 GAA). Bostwick was also named a NFHCA third team All-American in 2004 and a second team All-Big East performer in 2005.
"I am so thrilled to have Melissa join our coaching staff," said head coach Heather Lewis. "We went into the search process with a specific intention of hiring a candidate with goalkeeping experience. For our players to have the opportunity to work with an All-American, All-Big East caliber goalkeeper is outstanding in terms of their potential development. Melissa comes to us with very high recommendations from Big East coaches. The benefit is her style of play and teaching methods will be similar to what we stress here in Bison Hockey. So, while it is her first season with us, I do not anticipate there being too much change in how we approach our team defense; rather, I look for Melissa to assist us in refining and strengthening our goalkeeping skills and team defense."
Bostwick, a San Diego, Calif., native will be primarily responsible for the development and training of the goalkeepers as well as assisting with the on-field areas of team defense and set piece execution. She will also oversee strength and conditioning, community service projects and will assist the coaching staff with recruiting, scouting, game and practice preparation and individual player development and compliance.
Bostwick graduated from University City High School in 2001. She received her bachelors degree in English from UConn in May of 2006. In addition, Bostwick has also spent the past four summers assisting with the UConn Field Hockey camps.
Bucknell Field Hockey will begin their 2006 campaign on August 26 at home against the Colonials of Robert Morris University at 3 p.m.
