BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - A goal in the latter part of the first half by Kevin Holmes (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) helped the Bucknell men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie against Binghamton in its season opener Friday afternoon at the soggy West Gym Field.
Holmes took a pass in the 38th minute from Chris Hennings (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) about five yards in front of the net and snuck the ball past Binghamton goalie Ryan Bertoni, who made four saves in the match, for his second career score.
The Bearcats got on the board nearly six minutes earlier when Matt Narode tipped a cross from Cody Germain into the net in the 32nd minute.
Junior Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood), making his first start since his freshman year, stopped six shots in goal for the Bison, who have not lost a season opener since 2003.
Led by four shots apiece from Narode and Germain, Binghamton (0-0-1) outshot Bucknell (0-0-1) by a 15-8 margin, including 11-5 in regulation. The Bison did register seven corner kicks to the Bearcats' six, however, three of them came in overtime.
"This game showed the character of our team," commented Bucknell eighth-year head coach Brendan Nash. "In the past we may not have come back from our early deficit."
The Bison continue their two-game, season-opening road trip with a contest at West Virginia Tuesday, Aug. 29. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m. in Morgantown, W. Va.
