The Bucknell women's track and field team concluded its final day of competition at the 2006 outdoor NCAA East Regionals on Saturday, held at the Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C. Junior Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) represented the Orange and Blue in the pole vault, while classmate Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten) served as the Bison's only dual-event athlete in the meet, throwing the discus and the hammer.
Buczko battled in the pole vault and recorded a mark of 12 feet, 6 inches, for 12th place. She tried to clear 13 and was successful on her second attempt, but unfortunately her pole fell back and knocked down the bar. Buczko was unable to clear the height on her third and final attempt.
In her first event of the day, Grap took 17th in the hammer with a heave of 172-7. She placed 20th in the discus, throwing 140-11.
Winning the women's pole vault and breaking the East Regional record was Lacy Janson of Florida State, leaping 13-11 3/4. Jenny Dahlgren of Georgia won the women's hammer, also with a Regional record-breaking mark of 236-3, while Precious Akins of South Carolina won the discus at 173-3.
Both Buczko and Grap were individual 2006 outdoor Patriot League champions in their respective events.
