Bucknell Swimming and Diving Places Three on Academic All-District Teams

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Three members of the Bucknell swimming and diving squads were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II At-Large teams the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday. Senior Adam Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) received first team honors and classmate Todd Bauer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) earned a second team selection for the men, while junior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) was tabbed as a member of the women's all-district at-large second team.
Freeman, who was named to the All-District second team in 2005, becomes the first two-time Academic All-District selection in the history of the Bison program. Freeman and Bauer's 2006 honors represent the third and fourth all-time for the Bucknell men. As a member of the All-District II first team, Freeman advances to the national ballot for the chance to become the second Bucknell swimming and diving Academic-All America, following Scott Woodworth, who was honored in 1998.
Scheffter is the third Academic All-District selection for the Bison women. Kathy Lynch earned the honor in 1987 and, most recently, Abby Weaver was named second team All-District in 2002.
In 2005-06, Scheffter was named First Team All-Patriot League after scoring 48 points at the championship meet, helping the Bison to their fourth-straight league title. During the season, she posted five wins in the 50 free and took home the silver in the event at the league meet. Scheffter collected seven wins in the 100 free and won silver in the 100 free as well. She was also named Patriot League Female Swimmer of the Week two times during the course of the season.
Scheffter, an English major with a 3.8 GPA, was named the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year for women's swimming and diving in 2004-05. She is a Dean's List student, a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member and an Intervarsity Christian Fellowship leader.
Freeman finished his Bucknell diving career 10th on the Patriot League Class of 2006 Top-10 list with 128 career points in league championship competition. For the second-straight year at the annual Bison swimming and diving awards banquet, Freeman was the Bob Richards Award recipient as the team's most outstanding male diver based on individual dual meet and championship point totals.
In 2005-06, he amassed a team-best 97 points in dual meet competition with five wins and five runner-up finishes in the one-meter dive and three wins and five second-place showings in the three-meter dive. Freeman captured the bronze in the one-meter at the 2006 Patriot League Championships and was named Patriot League Male Diver of the Week three times throughout the year. He currently holds school records in four of six Bucknell diving categories including one-meter six-optionals, one-meter 11 dives, three-meter six optionals, and three-meter 11 dives, and ranks in the top five on the other two diving lists.
Away from the pool, Freeman posted a 3.64 GPA as a double major in mechanical engineering and economics and was named Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year twice. He also served as Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president and was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Mortar Board, Omicron Delta Epsilon, Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Sigma Phi Epsilon. At Bucknell's Senior Athletic Awards Banquet, Freeman won the Alvin F. Jackson Memorial Scholar Athlete Award, presented to senior athletes "for outstanding academic and athletic achievement, and future promise as Bucknell alumni."
Bauer totaled 80 points in dual meet competition during the 2005-06 season. He finished third on the men's Patriot League Class of '06 Top-10 list with 154 career points and earned his fourth All-Patriot League honor when he was named to the first team after scoring 44 points for the Bison at the 2006 league meet. Bauer set new program top-10 times in all three events he competed in at this year's PL Championships, including toppling a 20-year school record in the 500 free.
A four-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member, Bauer holds three individual top-10 performances in the Bucknell record book in addition to his 500 free mark. He ranks second in the 1650 free, fifth in the 1000 free and sixth in the 200 free. He is also part of the 800 free relay squad that ranks 10th in the all-time list.
Bauer garnered two awards at this year's annual Bucknell swimming and diving banquet, winning the Peter O'Keeffe-Jim Harvey Award for most outstanding swimmer and the Dearstyne-Dorr Award that "recognizes the student-athlete who by performance, leadership and example, contributes the most to the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team." He was also presented with the Edward W. Pangburn Award "for sportsmanship, fellowship, and contribution to the University" at the Senior Athletic Awards Banquet.
In the classroom, Bauer, a mathematics and education major, compiled a 3.65 cumulative GPA and was a member of the Dean's List. Bauer served as Pi Mu Mathematics Honor Society president and worked for New Life Youth and Family Services, a correctional school for juveniles.
To be eligible for the Academic All-District At-Large teams, an athlete must be have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. CoSIDA's District II covers Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
