LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell outdoor track and field team will be bringing eight athletes to the NCAA East Regional, at North Carolina A&T State University's Irwin Belk Track, in Greensboro, N.C., on May 26-27.
In order to earn a place at the Regional meet, the athletes either needed to win an individual event at the 2006 Patriot League Outdoor Championships, or meet certain qualifying standards.
Senior Dan Frake (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and junior Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) will be representing the Bison in the men's hammer. Frake won the event at the PL meet (194 feet, 9 inches) and hit a season and personal-high qualifying mark of 200-2, at the 2006 IC4A Championships. Hoffman hit the standard at the Bison Outdoor Classic (April 14-15) with a heave of 182-8.
Running in the 800-meters will be junior Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area). Sawko won the event at the PL meet with a time of 2 minutes, 9.97 seconds. Joining Sawko on the track will be classmate Catherine Trentacoste (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) in the 400. Trentacoste also won her event at the PL meet (56.71).
Junior Josh Kaehler (Hanover, Pa./South Western) earned a place in the javelin by both striking gold at the PL Championships (212-9) and hitting the standard at the Classic (210-0).
In the pole vault will be junior Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler), turning in a qualifying and season's best leap of 13-1 1/2 at the Penn Relays (April 27-29). Buczko was also the PL champion in the event.
Sophomore Beverly Rogers (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold) will be competing for Bucknell in the javelin. She posted a season's best throw of 145-5 at the Patriot League Championships.
Rounding out Bucknell's participation in the Regional is junior Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten). Grap won both the PL hammer and discus, hitting marks of 186-3 and 150-1, respectively. Grap's highest discus mark of the season was also a personal record of 150-6.
Frake, Hoffman, Sawko and Trentacoste will be competing on Friday, while the remaining three are scheduled to see action on Saturday. If they qualify, both Trentacoste and Sawko could also be competing on Saturday in the finals of their respective events.
