LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior first baseman Lauren Wible (Dover, Pa./Dover) earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine University Division Academic All-District II Softball Team, announced Thursday by CoSIDA, for the third consecutive year. By virtue of her selection to the first team Wible, a 2005 Academic All-American, is now a finalist for her second straight Academic All-America honor. The national Academic All-America teams are scheduled to be announced May 31.
To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.20 GPA and be a starter or key reserve on his/her team.
Wible, who became the 13th softball player and 110th Bucknell student-athlete overall to earn Academic All-America plaudits last year, had a solid 2006 campaign. A four-time all-league selection, including a first-team member this season, Wible was third on the squad with a .297 batting average. She also contributed three home runs and 26 runs batted in, second on the team.
The only Bison to play in all 52 games this year, Wible led the team with 20 runs scored and was third with 44 hits. Her nine doubles ranked fourth on the squad, while her 14 walks led the team and brought her career total to 70. She was among the Patriot League leaders in both hitting (17th) and RBI (7th).
Wible, a first baseman, ended her career with 145 consecutive starts and is among the all-time leaders on many of the program's all-time lists. She owns the career record for home runs with 17 and RBI with 96, while her 170 career games played and 40 career doubles rank second. With 167 career hits Wible is fourth on that list, while her .351 career batting average is fifth. She scored 73 runs in her career to tie for sixth place on that list.
Last year Wible led the nation in hitting with a .524 batting average, the 11th-best in NCAA history, and was named both the Patriot League Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Off the field, Wible is an English major with a 3.79 cumulative GPA and has been a Dean's List member every semester of her college career. An NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete in 2003-04 and the winner of the Charles F. White Memorial Prize for Scholar-Athletes, Wible has been a regular on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. The Eastern Athletic Conference Merit Award winner, she is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
Bucknell has now had 10 student-athletes earn Academic All-District honors this year, its most since 2003-04.
The Bison finished the 2006 season with a 15-37 record and missed qualifying for the Patriot League Tournament by just one game.
