WORCESTER, MASS. - The number four seeded Bucknell women's lacrosse squad concluded its season in a heartbreaking 13-7 loss at the hands of number one seed Holy Cross in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals on Saturday afternoon on the Hart Turf Field, in Worcester, Mass. Freshman Jackie Bodnar (Madison, N.J./Madison) turned in a season-high five goals in the Bison's offensive effort.
The Orange and Blue tried to come back from being behind 6-2 at the half, but just could not close the margin enough to pull off a W.
Holy Cross struck out first with a goal from Patricia Sutton just under three minutes into the game, but Bucknell quickly retaliated and answered with a goal from Bodnar at the 25:52 minute mark. The Crusaders would go onto score four straight goals, including a pair from both Carolyn Smirti and Melissa Conley, within a span of approximately 14 minutes of play.
Bodnar netted an unassisted tally with 6:23 left to play in the half, but Holy Cross' Amy Archambault closed out the period with a score off a free position shot, with the clock reading 1:23.
It was the Orange and Blue who struck first in the second half, with a goal from Bodnar, off a pass from freshman Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia), just 10 seconds underway. However, Sutton was determined to keep the Crusaders on top with two consecutive goals in just under a five minute time span. The Crusaders offered another goal, but a red-hot Bodnar retaliated off a feed from Buechel at 19:18. Buechel quickly added a tally of her own at 18:54, which was unfortunately answered with three Crusader goals from the sticks of Cara O'Sullivan, Kaitlin Nangle and Smirti.
Junior Lauren Kremer (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) sprung off the draw after Smirti's goal at 5:15, and fed sophomore Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) for a score with the clock reading 5:00. Deitrich immediately found Bodnar for Bucknell's final tally of the game at 4:48.
Holy Cross closed out the contest with a mark from Shelia Rom with 2:57 left to play.
In the Bison's defensive effort, senior goalkeeper Lizzy McDaniel (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) compiled four saves in the first half and three in the second, for a total of seven, while classmate and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Rachel Prowler (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Chart) with three groundballs.
To add to her five goals, Bodnar finished the day with three draw controls, while Buechel recorded one goal, two assists and four groundballs.
The Bison ended their season with an overall record of 7-10, and a Patriot League mark of 3-3.
