LEWISBURG, Pa. - Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division Player of the Week after recording 25 saves in two games last weekend. She is the fourth different Bucknell player to earn the honor this season, and it is the fifth time the Bison have won the award.
Bynum opened last week with a career high-tying 14 saves during a 9-7 win over George Washington. She followed that season-high figure with 11 saves in a 7-1 win over Maryland. She saved .758 percent of the shots she saved in the two games.
Bynum, who has started all but two of Bucknell's games this season, has 191 saves this year and has boosted her career total to 707. That figure is second to Lindsay Chesterfield on the Bison career list. Bynum has a .554 save percentage this season, and .574 in her three-year career.
In addition to her defensive efforts in net, Bynum also tallied her second career goal with a length-of-the-pool toss at the end of the third quarter against the Colonials that staked the Bison to a 9-3 lead. She also has 17 assists this year, and 41 in her career.
Bucknell is idle this weekend, but returns to action with the Southern Championships next Saturday. The Bison, seeded second in the four-team field, will take on third-seeded Maryland at 11:30 a.m. in Princeton, N.J. Bynum made 20 saves in three games at last year's Southern Championships, held at Kinney Natatorium.
