LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bison men's tennis defeated Villanova, 5-2, early Tuesday afternoon on Bucknell's tennis courts, in Lewisburg, Pa., to earn their fifth win of the season. Bucknell turned in one of its strongest performances of the season in doubles play, where they gave up a total of only 10 points combined.
In singles play, sophomore Ira Reibeisen (Armonk, N.Y./Rye Coutry Day-Upper) once again in the No. 1 spot, quickly defeated Dimitri Chimerakis 6-1, 6-1, while senior Asher Salam (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) also dominated over his opponent in the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-3.
Sophomore John Lashnits (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greely) snagged the victory in the No. 3 spot from Scott Fahrendorf, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, while freshman Ryan Sandburg (Orange, Calif./Canyon) also came out the victor in the No. 5 position (6-3, 6-0).
In a tremendous doubles outing, the pair of Reibeisen and Salam dominated in the No. 1, 8-2, while Lashnits and Sandburg hung onto an 8-5 victory in the No. 2 spot. In the final doubles position, the freshman duo of Jonathan Brenner (Manhasset, N.Y./Chaminade) and Daniel Bednarek (Haworth, N.J./Bergen Catholic) won its match, 8-3.
"Last year, we struggled to beat Villanova, 4-3," said head coach Rebecca Helt. "This year, we dominated in the doubles and most of the singles matches. We get better both mentally and physically every time we are on the court."
The Bison (5-10, 1-2 Patriot League) will return to action in Patriot League match-up at home in Lewisburg, on Saturday, April 15 against Colgate. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
