Bucknell Swimming and Diving Announces Awards at Annual Team Banquet

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell swimming and diving teams celebrated the success of their 2005-06 season and honored several individuals for their achievements at the annual team awards banquet this past weekend. Among those recognized were sophomore Lauren Thomas (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), senior Adam Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington), senior Todd Bauer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area), senior Lectie Altman (Syracuse, N.Y./William Nottingham) and senior Mary Krakowski (Erie, Pa./McDowell).
Thomas received the "Cathy Karpuk Award", given to the most outstanding female diver based on individual dual meet and championship point totals. In 2005-06, Thomas totaled 52 points in dual meets and was named the Patriot League Female diver of the week after taking first in the one-meter dive at the Navy Invitational and was the runner-up in the three-meter at the meet. She qualified for the finals in both diving events at the Patriot League Championships and took fourth in the one-meter and eighth in the three-meter.
For the second-straight year, Freeman was the "Bob Richards Award" recipient as the team's most outstanding male diver based on individual dual meet and championship point totals. Freeman, one of co-captains for the men's squad this year, amassed a team best 97 points in dual meet competition this season with five wins and five runner-up finishes in the one-meter dive and three wins and five second-place showings in the three-meter dive. Freeman captured the bronze in the one-meter at the Patriot League Championships and was named Patriot League Male Diver of the Week three times throughout the year. He also finished 10th on the men's Patriot League Class of '06 Top-10 list with 128 career points in PL Championship competition.
Bauer garnered two awards on the evening, winning the "Peter O'Keeffe-Jim Harvey Award" for most outstanding swimmer and the "Dearstyne-Dorr Award" that "ecognizes the student-athlete who by performance, leadership and example, contributes the most to the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team." 2005-06 co-captain, Bauer totaled 80 points in dual meet competition during the season. He finished third on the men's PL Class of '06 Top-10 list with 154 career points and earned his fourth All-Patriot League honor as he was named to the first team after scoring 44 points for the Bison at the league meet. Bauer set new program top-10 times in all three events he competed in at the PL Championships, including toppling a 20-year school record in the 500 free.
Altman was honored as the most outstanding female swimmer with the "Kathy Frazier-Margaret Grunow Award" after totaling a team-best 141 points in dual meets her senior year. A co-captain for the women's squad, Altman received league's female High Point Award for most career points scored in PL Championship competition in the Class of `06 and earned a spot on the All-Patriot League first team after winning the 200 back at this year's league Championships. She went undefeated in the 200 back in 2005-06 and had five wins and two runner-up finishes in the 100 back. Altman took home the bronze in the 100 back at the league meet and broke her own school record in the 200 free to finish fourth in the event at the PL Championships. She also earned Patriot League Female Swimmer of the Week honors once this season.
The "Robert A. Latour Award", which "recognizes leadership, sportsmanship, outstanding achievement and dedication to Bucknell women's swimming" was presented to Krakowski. She finished fourth on the women's Class of '06 Top-10 list with 120.5 points and served as a co-captain in 2005-06. Krakowski was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team after scoring 29.5 points at this year's league meet and recorded three wins in the 100 fly and two runner-up finishes in the 50 free during the season. She qualified for the finals in the 100 fly, 50 free and the 100 free at the PL Championships, with her best finish coming in the 50 free, taking fifth in the event.
2006-07 team captains were announced at the banquet, as well. Juniors Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and Laura Goeller (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) were named the women's captains for the upcoming season and junior Matt Crandell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) and sophomore Tyler Sowell (Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) will serve as co-captains for the men next year.
The Bucknell women won their fourth-consecutive Patriot League title in 2005-06, while the men took third at the league meet and Bison head coach Jerry Foley was named the Patriot League Men's Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year.
