LEESBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) continued her outstanding spring with a career-best 75 in the opening round of the Georgetown Invitational on Saturday, and the Bucknell women's golf team stands in seventh place with a team score of 329.
Loughney, who already has a second-place finish under her belt this spring at The Shamrock two weeks ago in South Carolina, sits in second place at Georgetown, just two strokes behind the Hoyas' Christy Larrimore. Loughney entered the tournament with an outstanding spring scoring average of 77.8, and she lowered that mark to 77.3. The round of 75 is a shot better than her previous personal best of 76, achieved three times.
Saturday Loughney cruised through the front nine at Raspberry Falls Country Club in two-under-par 34, the best mark in the 80-player field. The back nine played much harder -- only 14 players in the field shot a lower score on the back than the front -- and Loughney's 41 coming in was still well below the tournament average. Her four birdies tied for the most in the field.
Also for Bucknell, Teri Schlang (Albany, N.Y./Stratton Mountain School) shot 83, Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) shot 85 and Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) carded an 86.
Georgetown leads the team standings with a score of 310, four shots ahead of Yale at 314. Rounding out the 15-team field are Columbia (322), Bethune-Cookman (323), Princeton (325), Gonzaga (325), Bucknell (329), Harvard (334), St. John's (337), Lehigh (343), Boston College (346), Rutgers (349), Siena (351), Penn (359) and Hofstra (373).
The second and final round begins Sunday morning.
