LEWISBURG, Pa. - Buoyed by four goals from Madalyn Booth, Lafayette rallied for an 8-6 victory over the Bucknell women's lacrosse team in the Patriot League openers for both teams on Thursday evening. Freshman Bonnie Buechel scored two goals for the Bison, who dropped to 2-2 on the season.
Bucknell kept the Leopards (1-1) off the scoreboard for the first 21:46 of the contest, but despite the outstanding defense the Bison could muster only a 2-0 lead in this hard-fought affair. Emily Burman, this week's Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, scored just 2:24 into the game, and nearly 16 minutes later Tory Field scored on an eight-meter shot to make it 2-0.
Lafayette drew even by halftime with two goals in the final 8:14 of the period. Kaleigh Mountain finally got the Leopards on the board when she finished a feed from Emily Archibald, and Booth tied it with 3:47 left in the half.
Early in the second half Booth scored twice in a span of just 1:22 to give Lafayette the lead for good. On two occasions Buechel reduced two-goal margins to one for the Bison, but inside eight minutes to play Booth and Kristin Ruminski scored back-to-back goals just 37 seconds apart to make it 7-4.
Elizabeth Whipple and Erin Weinstein scored for the Bison in the final three minutes of the game, but Ruminski added a key insurance goal with 59 seconds left.
Bucknell outshot Lafayette 27-21, but the Leopards benefited from 15 saves from goalie Jaclyn Kushner. Lizzy McDaniel made nine saves for the Bison.
Bucknell next heads to California for a pair of games during Spring Break. The Bison take on Columbia in Davis, Calif., on March 13 and UC Davis on March 15.
