LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team finished second in the nation in the 2005 Division I academic standings, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced on Monday. Winning the overall NFCHA Division I National Academic Team Award was Louisville, with a 3.65 grade point average. Also announced was the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad, on which the Orange and Blue had the second-highest number of representatives. Louisville topped the list with 20.
The Bison, who placed third in the nation in 2004 and fourth in 2003, finished the 2005 fall semester with a team GPA of 3.45. Robert Morris (3.43 GPA), Drexel (3.41 GPA) and Yale (3.35) took the three, four and five spots, respectively.
"At the beginning of the season, this team set a goal to achieve the highest team GPA in the country," said head coach Heather Lewis. "And while we fell one spot short, I'm very proud of the commitment our student-athletes make both on the field and in the classroom."
"When you look at the success of this team on the field and combine it with their success in the classroom, Bucknell should be very proud of how these student-athletes have balanced, quite successfully, the demands of being a student-athlete in the Patriot League and at the Division I level."
Bucknell had 14 representatives on this year's squad, bettering last year's total by three members. American and West Chester also had 14.
