Bucknell Women's Lacrosse Falls to Virginia Tech 6-5 In Overtime Heartbreaker

LEWISBURG, Pa. - It turned out to be a nice sunny day as the Bison women's lacrosse team battled Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Graham Field in Lewisburg, Pa. Despite an early lead, Bucknell could not hang on as they fell 6-5 in two overtime periods. Senior Lizzy McDaniel (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) played an outstanding defensive game in the goal for the Orange and Blue and collected a season-best 14 stops.
Bucknell struck out first with freshman Jackie Bodnar (Madison, N.J./Madison) netting the first score of the game, off an assist from classmate Bonnie Buechel (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) in just under the first five minutes. The Bison then built on their one goal lead with a score from freshman Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge), from fellow newcomer Catherine Barry (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), at the 13:37 minute mark.
The Hokies retaliated with three goals of their own, all in just over five minutes, setting the score at 3-2. With 11 minutes left, Bucknell did not let the lead slip away as Buechel knocked in two unassisted tallies to give the Bison the 4-3 edge going into the second period.
Evans opened the half with an unassisted goal, which was soon answered by Virginia Tech's Jackie Gray at the 43:46 minute mark. The Hokies' Lindsay Pieper then evened out the score to 5-5, with just over 11 minutes left to play.

Both teams were able to shut each other's offense down for the rest of the half, taking the game into a three-minute overtime period, which ended scoreless, forcing another three minutes.
Katie Boyle, of Virginia Tech, decided to take the contest into her own hands as she caused Bison sophomore Lauren Deitrich (Collegeville, Pa./Hill School) to turnover the ball, which Boyle recovered and then ran down the field to score the game winner.
In her best game all season, McDaniel's effort was a huge key in keeping the game close as she not only marked her season-high in saves, but also collected one ground ball and caused one turnover. Also playing strong defensively for the Orange and Blue was Deitrich with three groundballs, two caused turnovers and one draw control, while freshman Alex Radebaugh (Freeland, Md./Notre Dame Prep) had three groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers.
Bucknell will look for its third win of the season as it hosts Drexel on Tuesday, March 28 at 4 p.m., at Graham Field.
