WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Looking to build off a terrific showing in last week's spring opener, the Bison women's golf team shot 329 in damp, chilly conditions Saturday in the first round of the William & Mary Invitational. Bucknell is in a tie for ninth place out of 18 teams, with the second and final round slated for Sunday morning.
Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic), who finished second individually at The Shamrock last weekend, paced Bucknell with an 80 on Saturday at Ford's Colony CC. Loughney made the turn in 35, the second-best front nine in the field, but then shot 45 on the back nine. She is tied for 21st place overall.
Also for Bucknell, Kathryn Batchelor (Trenton, N.J./Princeton Day School) shot 81, Teri Schlang (Albany, N.Y./Stratton Mountain School) finished in 83, Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) shot 85 and Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) shot 90.
Backed by the top two individual scores of the day - a 72 from Tammy Clelland and a 74 from Joanna Periversoff - Toledo opened up a big lead in the team standings. The Rockets shot 298, 15 strokes better than second-place William & Mary (313). Virginia is third at 315, followed by High Point (318), Methodist (325), Columbia (326), Longwood (327), Siena (327), Bucknell (329) and William & Mary "Green" (329).
The tournament is scheduled to resume on Sunday with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
