LEWISBURG, Pa. - Karina Reyner and Elyse Colgan scored goals 10 seconds apart late in the fourth quarter to snap a 5-5 tie, and 16th-ranked Princeton held on to defeat Bucknell 7-6 in a hard-fought CWPA women's water polo match Saturday evening at Kinney Natatorium.
The Bison, who fell to 11-4 on the season with all four losses coming to nationally ranked opponents, got two goals each from Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) and Mallory Sullivan (Tulare, Calif./Tulare Western). Princeton (11-1), which suffered its first loss of the season earlier in the day to Maryland, was led by Carolina Ardilla's two goals.
The Bison got off to a slow start in this one, giving up the first three goals of the game, including two in the first two minutes of the contest. But the second quarter was all Bucknell, as Sullivan, Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) and Gins scored in succession to knot the game at 3-3 at the half.
It was a see-saw second half, as twice Princeton scored to take the lead, only to have Bucknell tally an equalizer. First it was Gins evening things at 4-all with 1:30 to play in the third period, then after Ardilla made it 5-4 for the Tigers early in the fourth period, Sullivan tapped in a rebound to tie the game again with 5:24 to play.
Princeton finally pulled ahead for good with 2:46 to play. With a Bison player off on an ejection, the Tigers worked the ball around to Reyner for the go-ahead goal. Bucknell quickly turned the ball over, leading to a breakaway for Colgan and a 7-5 Princeton lead.
The Bison bounced right back with a goal on a hard shot from Jessica Trimis (La Crescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley) with 2:17 to play. Bucknell played strong defense the rest of the way and forced a turnover with 10 seconds left, but Princeton goalie Natalie Kim smothered Gins' shot with one second to play.
Bucknell next travels to California for its annual Spring Break trip. The Bison will play seven games next week, beginning with Macalester in Redlands, Calif., on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
