HAMILTON, N.Y. - Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) scored 21 points, including 14 in the second half, as the Bucknell women's basketball team outscored Colgate by 19 points after halftime on its way to an 81-63 victory Saturday at Cotterell Court. The win was the sixth in a row for the Bison and gave head coach Kathy Fedorjaka her 200th career victory.
Schober made all seven of her field goal attempts and was 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) added 18 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) tallied 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. That trio combined to make 20 of its 30 field goal attempts. Melanie Cargle, Gretchen Polinski and Meghan Curtin led Colgate with 13 points apiece.
With the victory, Bucknell improved to 14-7 overall and 7-1 in the Patriot League to match its best-ever eight-game conference start. The Bison also jumped into first place in the Patriot League standings by virtue of a Holy Cross loss at Lafayette Saturday. The win was the seventh in a row on the road for the Bison, who are one victory shy of tying the program record for consecutive victories overall.
A 23-2 run in the second half was key for Bucknell, which limited Colgate to just one field goal in a seven-minute span. Colgate (5-16, 3-5 PL) opened the second half with five straight points to take a 40-34 lead, its largest of the game, but then the Bison began to push the tempo. They limited the Raiders to 1-for-13 shooting during the run and forced three turnovers on their way to a 57-42 lead. Schober scored seven points during the run, many on fast break layups, while Hollobaugh added six and Brown five.
The Bison led by as many as 21 points on four occasions in the second half as they made 17 of 30 field goals after halftime.
The first half was much closer than the second. After Bucknell jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the opening two-plus minutes of the game and forced a Colgate timeout, the Raiders reeled off an 8-2 run. Neither team would lead by more than six points the rest of the half.
Both teams had balanced scoring in the first half as eight players for each scored in the first 20 minutes of play. The Bison were limited to 11 of 35 shooting as the Colgate defense forced them to hurry many of their field goal attempts.
The first half featured a total of 30 free throw attempts, 15 by each team. Bucknell connected on 11, while Colgate made 13. A pair of free throws by Hollobaugh with six seconds remaining gave the Bison a 34-32 lead and it appeared as though they would take a lead into intermission, but Meghan Curtin gave the Raiders the halftime advantage by beating the buzzer with a 25-footer. It was the first time Bucknell trailed at halftime since Jan. 3 against Stony Brook.
Bucknell, which ranked 12th in field goal percentage defense in the latest NCAA rankings, limited Colgate to just 29 percent shooting in the game and forced 14 turnovers.
The Bison dominated the rebounding category, grabbing a season-high 52 to Colgate's 41. Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) led the way with 12, while Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) and Brown each added seven. Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) matched Hollobaugh with six.
The 81 points were the most Bucknell has scored since tallying 88 against Navy Jan. 7.
Fedorjaka owns a career record of 200-153, including 133-115 in nine seasons at Bucknell.
Bucknell returns home to host American Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m.
