BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Sophomore Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) won the 50 free and was a part of two first-place relays for the Bison, but the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team came up short against Lehigh, 170.5-129.5 in Patriot League action on Saturday.
Steadman captured the top spot in the 50 free with a time of 21.95 and took first in the 200 medley relay along with teammates freshman Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area), sophomore Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) and senior Mark Kretzer (Northport, N.Y./Harborfields) with a time of 1:35.58. The team of sophomore John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), Kawczenski, senior Todd Bauer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) and Steadman won the 400 medley relay with a season-best time of 3:11.37. Steadman also finished third in the 100 free with a time of 48.81.
Senior Adam Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) was the only other individual winner for the Orange and Blue in the meet as he was victorious in the one-meter dive with a mark of 273.90. Freeman scored 291.90 points in the three-meter dive to finish as the runner-up in the event.
Senior William Schilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) recorded a pair of second-place finishes on the day in the 100 breast (59.85) and in the 200 breast (2:10.60) as did Bauer in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.06 and in the 500 free with a time of 4:43.82. Kretzer was the runner-up in the 100 fly with a time of 53.18 and swam the 200 IM in 2:01.49 to finish third, while also taking third in the 100 back (53.78). Junior Matt Crandell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) came in second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.76 and was third in the 100 fly (54.13). Freshman Patrick Stummer (Fulton, N.Y.) swam the 1000 free in 9:55.51 to take the runner-up spot in that event and posted a third-place time of 4:52.27 in the 500 free.
Freshman Nicholas Hanes (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and Kawczenski rounded out the top finishers for the Bison with Hanes finishing second in the 200 back with a time of 1:56.70 and Kawczenski swimming the 100 back in 53.57, good for second in the event.
Bucknell will next compete on Saturday, February 11, when the team will travel to Annapolis, Md., to compete in the Navy Invitational beginning at 11 a.m.
