Bucknell Men's Swimming and Diving Takes Third at Patriot League Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior William Schilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) collected a gold medal for the Bison as the Bucknell men's swimming and diving team finished third at the Patriot League Championships, held in Navy's Lejeune Hall this Thursday through Saturday. The Orange and Blue recorded 623 points to take third out of eight teams behind Navy (853 points) and Army (651.5 points). Following the meet, Bucknell head coach Jerry Foley was named Patriot League Men's Swimming Coach of the Year for the second time in his career after first earning the honor in 2003.
Schilling won the 200 breast to capture Bucknell's lone gold medal in the three-day meet. Sophomore Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Philips Exeter Academy) finished fourth in the event with a time of 2:04.32 to improve his third-ranking personal best mark in the Bison record books. Junior Clifton Cazes (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlate) took seventh and also improved his top-10 time which ranks fifth in program history to 2:07.78. Freshman Michael Deighan (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) broke into the Bucknell top-10 list as well, placing 10th in 2:09.92, good for 10th all-time.
Senior Todd Bauer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) captured bronze in the 1650 free, improving his personal best to 16:07.93 in the event, second in program history, while freshman Patrick Stummer (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) posted a fourth-place time of 16:15.50 to set a new No. 7 mark in Bucknell's top-10 all-time. Freshman Brendan McGregor (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) finished with a time of 16:14.06, which ranks fourth in school history.
Senior Mark Kretzer (Northport, N.Y./Harborfields) earned a bronze medal as well, finishing third in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.90. His mark of 1:51.79 in the preliminaries was a new personal best and ranks third in the Bison record books. Junior Matt Crandell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) came in fifth in the 200 fly with the sixth-best time in program history, 1:53.29.
In the three-meter dive, senior Adam Freeman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) scored 255.70 points to take seventh and the 400 free relay team of John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), freshman Mark Kawczenski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area), freshman Christopher Amato (East Norwich, N.Y.) and sophomore Grant Steadman (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) recorded a fifth-place finish with a time of 3:06.94.
