2006 Bucknell Invitational Schedule and Results
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Fans get their first chance to see the Bucknell women's water polo team at home in Kinney Natatorium this weekend when it hosts the Bucknell Invitational. The three-day event features 10 teams and 20 total games starting with the George Washington-Bucknell league matchup Friday night at 8 p.m.
There is just the one game Friday night, but games will run all day in Kinney Natatorium on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's slate features 11 games with the first beginning at 9 a.m. and the final one scheduled for 8:50 p.m. Sunday's eight-game lineup begins at 8 a.m. and concludes with a 4:10 p.m. game between nationally ranked Hartwick and Wagner. Bucknell plays Siena Saturday at 11:20 a.m. and Hartwick at 4:10 p.m. The Bison conclude their weekend of play Sunday at 1:50 p.m. opposite St. Francis (N.Y.).
Bucknell, George Washington, Hartwick, Marist, Maryland, Penn State-Behrend, Siena, Slippery Rock St. Francis (N.Y.) and Wagner comprise the 10-team field.
Bucknell enters its own invitational with a 6-1 record, which is the second-best start in program history behind last year's 11-1 mark. The lone loss for the Bison came to No. 17 Indiana at last week's Princeton Invitational.
Freshman Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley), who was named both the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week and the CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week two weeks ago, leads the team in scoring with 26 goals and 35 points and has tallied at least four goals in a game five times. She tied the Bucknell records for assists in a game (5) and points (10) in just her third career game. Rowe has also been a force on the defensive end with 10 steals to tie junior Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) for the team lead. She has also won 12 of 15 sprints to pace the Bison, who have won 21 of 30 overall.
Sophomore Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) and Jensen have helped shoulder the offensive load for Bucknell, which is averaging more than 12 goals per game. Gins, who was second on the team with 48 goals last year, is second on the squad with 19 this season. She has added seven assists as she approaches one-half of last year's point total of 61. Jensen leads the team in assists with 14 and has added eight goals. She is just 12 points away from her 2005 total and eclipsed 100 in her career with three points against the Hoosiers.
Another underclassman, junior Mandy Bynum has been solid in goal, making 34 saves while playing in all seven games and starting six. She has 550 career saves to rank second in Bucknell history behind Lindsay Chesterfield.
A young team that features just one senior, 88.6 percent of Bucknell's points through its first seven games have come from underclassmen. Amanda Nogic (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) is the lone senior and she is tied for third on the team in goals with eight and stands fourth in points with 16. She is already one away from her career high in each category.
The Bucknell Invitational is one of just two weekends Bucknell will play at Kinney Natatorium this spring. The Bison are also home for single games on Friday, March 10 and Saturday, March 11. Bucknell is back on the road next weekend when it takes on Villanova and Princeton in Princeton, N.J.
