BALTIMORE, Md. - Shalamar Oakley scored a career-high 25 points on an array of driving layups and floaters to lead Coppin State past the Bucknell women's basketball team by a 64-50 score Saturday afternoon at the Coppin Center. Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) led the way for the Bison, who turned the ball over a season-high 26 times, with 18 points and eight rebounds.
The game was close most of the way with neither team leading by more than five points until Coppin State used a 16-2 run mid-way through the second half to take a 47-37 lead. The Bison were able to climb back to within nine at 51-42 after a 3-pointer from the top of the key with the shot clock winding down from Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) with just under seven minutes to play. However, Oakley scored the next seven points for Coppin State, which extended its lead out to a game-high 16 points at 60-44 before Foster converted three late jumpers in the closing minutes to round out the scoring for the Bison.
Rashida Suber helped Oakley with the scoring load for the Eagles as she tallied 21 points, but was limited to just one 3-pointer after entering the game averaging more than four per contest to lead the nation. She and Oakley combined to shoot 20 of 38 from the field as they accounted for nearly two-thirds of the team's field goal attempts.
Bucknell led most of the first half, but the score remained close throughout. The Bison took a 24-19 lead with just under five minutes to play when Andrea Wright (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) converted a layup and got fouled. She missed her foul shot, but Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) hauled in the offensive rebound. She proceeded to knock down a 3-pointer from the right corner later in the possession, giving the Bison five consecutive points on the one trip down the court.
That 3-pointer was the last field goal of the first half for Bucknell as Coppin State went on a quick 6-0 run in a span of just over a minute. Suber, who totaled four points during the run, capped it off with a steal of a Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) pass and a fast break layup.
A pair of free throws from Wright, who finished with six points, in the final minute gave the Bison a 26-25 halftime advantage, marking the eighth time in 11 games they have held the lead at intermission.
Bucknell's bench of Seawright, Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) and Wright had a solid day with 11 points and 12 rebounds total. Wright corralled six boards, while Seawright totaled five.
Behind Foster's eight rebounds, five from Hollobaugh and the 12 from the bench Bucknell outrebounded Coppin State 32-31. Suber led the Eagles with eight rebounds.
Bucknell, which has alternated wins and losses over its last six games, returns home Tuesday night, Dec. 19, to face Binghamton at 7 p.m.
