LEWISBURG, Pa. - A driving Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) found Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain) for an open layup with 4.7 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Bucknell women's basketball team a 65-64 victory Tuesday night at Sojka Pavilion. Brown led the Bison with a season-high 19 points, while Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) chipped in a season-high 16 points and a career-high six steals.
Brown, who came off the bench for just the fourth time this season, and Seawright, who was making her first start of 2006-07, combined to shoot 13 of 23 from the field as they paced the Bucknell offense all night. In fact, Seawright tallied the first five points of the game and Brown registered five of her nine first-half points during a 13-6 run that helped the Bison build a 27-16 lead, their largest of the game, in the first half.
Bucknell did not trail the entire game until Laine Kurpniece, who posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, made 1 of 2 free throws to put the Bearcats up 53-52 with just over a minute to play in regulation. Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) appeared to clinch the game for Bucknell with four free throws in the final minute to make the score 56-53 with less than 15 seconds to play. However, after having the ball stripped from her by Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River), Erica Carter regained control deep in the left corner and swished in a 3-pointer as time expired to send the game to overtime.
Brown and Seawright scored the first seven points in the overtime period for the Bison, who jumped out to a 63-58 advantage less than two minutes in. The Bucknell offense then went into a funk where it turned the ball over twice and missed a pair of 3-pointers.
The Bison still held a one-point lead (63-62) with just over 30 seconds to play when Binghamton called a timeout to set up an offensive play. Following the timeout, Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) fouled out reaching in on Juta Jahilo 35 feet from the basket. Jahilo knocked down both free throws to put the Bearcats up by one point again for their second lead of the contest.
Following a timeout, Bucknell struggled to get open against the Binghamton defense that limited it to 37.7 percent shooting from the field. As time on the clock ran down, Brown aggressively drove into the Bearcat defense and drew three defenders underneath the basket before finding Hollobaugh for her only assist of the night. Without a timeout, the Bearcats hurried the ball down the court, but could not get off a last-second shot.
In addition to her scoring, which was her highest figure since netting a career-high 22 against Buffalo last December, Seawright wreaked havoc on the defensive side of the floor with her six steals. She also corralled five rebounds, including four key ones on the offensive boards. The biggest of those came in overtime and led to a 3-pointer by Brown to put Bucknell up by five points.
Brown, who entered the game sixth in the Patriot League in steals, added four to go along with four rebounds a she played a season-high 38 minutes despite coming off the bench.
Foster added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds and was 5 of 6 from the free throw line as Bucknell shot 14 of 21 overall, including 11 of 15 after halftime. She also added four blocks, her highest total since Nov. 25 against Richmond, to boost her season total to 52.
Binghamton, which defeated Colgate by 25 points on Saturday, also had three players in double figures, led by 16 points from Jahilo. Erica Carter tallied 10, while Laura Franceski added seven points, eight rebounds and five blocks in 22 minutes off the bench. The Bearcats, who had a front line rotation of four players that each measured at least 6-1, outrebounded the Bison 43-32, but were plagued by 22 turnovers.
Bucknell eclipsed the 60-point barrier for the first time since defeating Monmouth 67-53 on Nov. 24.
The Bison, who are 11-3 in their last 14 games against teams from New York State, travel to Loudonville, N.Y., to take on Siena Thursday, Dec. 21. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
