LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) was named the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week Monday after helping lead the Bucknell men's soccer team to its first-ever Patriot League title last weekend. The Patriot League Tournament MVP made a number of crucial saves as the Bison won both matches on penalty kicks.
Kuterbach helped fourth-seeded Bucknell (8-7-6) pull off its first upset of the weekend Friday night against No. 14 and top-seeded Lehigh. After playing to a 1-1 tie, the contest went to penalty kicks and Kuterbach made a pair of saves as the Bison advanced by a 4-1 margin. The Kingwood, Texas, native totaled two saves in regulation and overtime.
Kuterbach followed Friday's performance with his seventh shutout of the season Sunday against second-seeded Lafayette. After saving five shots in regulation and overtime, he made a diving save of the potential tying penalty kick to clinch the victory and the first NCAA Tournament berth in 30 years for Bucknell.
With 99 saves this season Kuterbach leads the Patriot League and has the most by a Bucknell goalie since 1999. His nine career shutouts rank tied for seventh on the Bison career list, while he owns a 0.94 goals-against average this year.
Bucknell and Kuterbach, who is a team captain and has played every second in goal this season, will take on George Mason in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m. in Fairfax, Va.
