
Bucknell Field Hockey Falls Short to No. 1 Seed American, 4-2, in Patriot League Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. - After back-to-back American goals to start the second half, the Bucknell field hockey team fell to the Eagles, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. Junior Chyncia Smith (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and freshman Megan Krebs (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./GAR Memorial) each collected goals in the Bison defeat. The Orange and Blue end the season with a 7-10 (1-4 PL) overall record, while American (13-6, 5-0 PL) continues on to the Patriot League finals against the winner of the Holy Cross/Lafayette matchup.
For most of the first half, the match was deadlocked at 0-0 with both team's defense not willing to let up the first goal of the match. With three minutes to play in the half, American received a penalty stroke. Camile Infante connected on the penalty stroke to put the Eagles up 1-0 heading into intermission.
Bucknell was outshot 8-3 in the half while losing the advantage in penalty corners, 4-2. Bison goalkeeper Emily Groendyke (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) notched three saves while American's Allison Fayfich collected two.
In the 42nd minute Camile Infante tallied her second goal of the match after Irene Schickhardt found her in the circle for a one-time shot. Three minutes later, Savannah Graybill hooked up with Heidi Hershberger for American's third goal of the match, putting the Eagles up 3-0 with 26 minutes remaining.
In the 52nd minute, Bucknell got on the board after Krebs collected a rebound off a penalty corner and shot it past the American netminder for her third goal of the season to reduce the Eagles lead to two. American answered the Bucknell goal three minutes later when Emily Harwood took the ball off a scramble in front of the net and blew a shot past Groendyke to put the Eagles up by three with 15 minutes left in the game. In the 65th minute, senior Callista Costopoulos found Smith wide open in the circle for a one-time goal and her fifth goal of the season to make the score 4-2.
For the match, American outshot Bucknell, 17-9, while holding even in penalty corners, 8-8. Groendyke ended the game with six saves for the Bison, while Fayfich tallied three saves for the Eagles.
