LEWISBURG, Pa. - Despite battling back in the second half, the No. 1-seed Bucknell women's soccer team came up just short of victory, falling to No. 4 Colgate, 2-1, in Patriot League semifinal action on Friday evening on Varsity Soccer Field. The loss brought the Bison to 12-5-1 on the season, while the Raiders, who advance to the championship game and will face No. 2 Navy on Sunday, improved to 13-5-0.
After controlling much of the possession from kick off, Colgate managed to notch its first goal of the contest in the 13th minute. With the Orange and Blue unable to clear the ball out of the box, Jillian Arnault collected it and send a shot past Bucknell senior goalkeeper Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) for her fifth goal of the season.
The Raiders then went ahead, 2-0, at 30:02 when a shot off the crossbar came to Franny Iacuzzi and she fired it home to cap off a first half that saw Colgate outshoot the Bison, 9-1.
Bucknell found more success in generating offensive opportunities after the intermission. At 81:08, junior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) brought the Bison to within a goal with her tally from 10 yards out off a feed from sophomore Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus).
With 18 seconds remaining in regulation, Gentile narrowly missed sending the match to overtime as her point-blank shot was met, just inches from crossing the goal line, with a diving save by Carly Sousa.
The Raiders led in shots, 13-6, and in corner kicks, 10-7. Sousa recorded two saves for Colgate, while Dry played 87:42 and made five stops for Bucknell. Freshman Sarah Seltzer (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline Academy of Dallas) played the final 2:18 for the Bison and did not face a shot. Fouls were 12-11, against Colgate.
