CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Adam Cristman and Nico Colaluca netted goals just over a minute apart midway through the first half to stake No. 4 Virginia to a 2-0 lead as the Cavaliers ended the Bucknell men's soccer team's impressive postseason run with a 4-0 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Wednesday night in front of 2,083 fans at Klockner Stadium.
The Bison, who were playing in their first NCAA Tournament since 1976, completed their 2006 campaign with a 9-8-6 record and their first-ever Patriot League title. Virginia (15-3-1) will host California, which shut out New Mexico Wednesday, Saturday at 7 p.m.
Bucknell played solid defense in the first 20 minutes of the game, but Cristman and Colaluca broke the ice. Cristman's goal came at the 26:23 mark when he rolled a shot to the right side of the goal that snuck under the outstretched arms of Bison goalie Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood). Colaluca was credited with the assist.
Cristman returned the favor 73 seconds later when Colaluca scored his seventh goal of the season on a shot from eight yards out.
It appeared Bucknell would go into the half trailing just 2-0, but Ian Holder tallied his third goal of the season, heading in a corner kick from Jonathan Villanueva.
The final goal of the match came in the opening minutes of the second half when Villanueva scored on a give-and-go from Yannick Reyering.
Kuterbach faced a season-high 28 shots and made 10 saves to finish the season with 116, the most by a Bison goalie since 1999. Bucknell managed just three shots with Conor O'Brien (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./St. Anthony's) registering one in the first half and Chris Hennings (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) tallying a pair in the second half.
Virginia totaled 10 corner kicks to just one for Bucknell. The lone corner kick of the contest for the Bison came with just under three minutes to play.
Justin Wolf (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and Dirk Swaneveld (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren) helped prevent Virginia goals in the second half by making saves when Kuterbach came out of net. Wolf stopped a shot off a corner kick, while Swaneveld sprinted back on defense to slide kick a ball away from an empty net.
"We have played some really good teams and I would put West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia among the best," commented eighth-year Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "I would be hard-pressed to pick the best one, but this Virginia team is up there.
"We were hoping to catch them off guard early in the game and keep the crowd out of the game."
With nine victories this season, Bucknell has reached that figure five times in Nash's eight years.
