LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's soccer freshman Chelsea Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS), the current Patriot League BRINE Rookie of the Week, picked up two more accolades this Wednesday as she was named to the Soccer America national women's Team of the Week and to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week, marking the first time a member of the Orange and Blue has received a Soccer Buzz Elite Team honor.
In the Bison's 2-1 victory over Navy last Sunday, Brinkman had a hand in both goals for the Orange and Blue. She took Bucknell's corner kick that led to a tally by sophomore Nicole Marotta (Bridgewater, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy), tying the score at one in the 43rd minute. The goal snapped a 983:28-minute shutout streak for the Midshipmen, which dated back to a 4-1 victory over Albany on Sept. 22nd. Sunday's setback was also the first of the year for Navy, as the team came into the contest as the only squad in the nation without a loss or a tie (19-0-0) and was ranked No. 14 in the Soccer America Top 25.
In the 69th minute, Brinkman set up junior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) for the game-winner as she served the ball into the box on a free kick, which was brought down by sophomore Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and sent home by Gentile.
On the season, Brinkman has six points on one goal and four assists, tying her for second on the squad in assists and matching the highest point total posted by a freshman through 17 games this year.
With the victory over the Midshipmen, Bucknell earned a share of the Patriot League regular season title and the right to host the league tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Orange and Blue will take on No. 4-seed Colgate this Friday in the Patriot League semifinal round at 7:15 p.m. on Varsity Soccer Field.
