MALIBU, Calif. - Mark Masterson (Kihei, Hawaii/Marin) totaled four goals as the No. 17 Bucknell men's water polo team hung in against No. 13 Pepperdine, but fell to the Waves 11-8 Sunday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. The Bison, who had their game scheduled for Sunday evening against No. 8 UC Davis cancelled, wrapped up their West Coast trip with a 4-1 record and are now 11-7 overall.
Pepperdine substituted liberally as Bucknell played the Waves even in each of the first three quarters. The score at the end of the first frame was 2-2. The squads were then knotted at four at halftime and five at the end of the third quarter. Pepperdine (7-8) outscored the Bison 6-3 in the fourth quarter as many of its starters saw significant playing time over the final eight minutes of action.
Masterson drew to within four of his career-high goal figure of 48 with his four scores against Pepperdine. He totaled 15 goals, nine assists and six steals in the five games the Bison played in California over the weekend.
Gabriel Heiber (Aventura, Fla./Miami Beach) helped Masterson on the offensive end with a pair of goals, including one as time expired, while Jason Rechel (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Sean Robinson (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) each found the back of the net once.
The defense in front of Bison goalie Luke Belenky (Kensington, Md./German School), who made two saves, came up with 15 steals. Chet Eimstad (Portland, Ore./Beaverton) led the way with three, while Josh Sunday (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Dan Schultz (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Nick Doyle (Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes) came up with two apiece.
With Sunday evening's game against UC Davis cancelled, Bucknell will next be in action with three league contests next weekend. The Bison travel to Baltimore, Md., Friday, Oct. 13, to take on Johns Hopkins. The next day Bucknell will face Navy and George Washington.
