LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving squads and first-year head coach Dan Schinnerer will gear up for the fast-approaching 2006-07 season with the annual Blue vs. Orange intra-squad meet on Friday evening in Kinney Natatorium, beginning at approximately 6 p.m.
Despite the loss of All-Patriot League performers Lectie Altman and Mary Krakowski to graduation, the Bison women return five of their top seven dual meet point scorers from the team that captured its fourth straight Patriot League Championship in 2006. Leading the way is senior Rebecca Scheffter (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) who scored 122 points in dual meet competition last year, good for second on the squad, and earned first team all-league honors for scoring 48 points at the PL Championships.
Right behind her in total dual meet points last season were Nikki Woodward (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow), Katherine Munson (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Laura Goeller (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) who all return for their senior seasons in 2006-07. Woodward and Goeller both were named to the All-Patriot League first team based on points scored in the championship meet last season with 44 and 41, respectively. Woodward ranks among the top-10 in the Bucknell record book for five individual events including holding the second-fastest times in program history for the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200 IM. Goeller ranks in the top-10 in three events, including second in the 400 IM.
Munson was one of two Bison swimmers to capture individual gold at the 2006 Patriot League Championships as she broke the Bucknell record in the 200 fly to take first and earn first team all-league accolades.
On the men's side, Bucknell lost Adam Freeman, Todd Bauer, Mark Kretzer and William Schilling to graduation from last year's squad that took third at the Patriot League Championships. All four athletes ranked in the Patriot League Class of 2006 Top-10 in career points scored in league championship competition, with Kretzer taking first on the list with 167 career points.
However, the 2006-07 team, which features just two seniors, returns many of its top performers from last season, including senior Matt Crandell (Winchester, Va./John Handley), sophomore Nicholas Hanes (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), junior John Peterman (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor), junior Theo Leriotis (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional Senior High) and junior Bradford Bennett (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area). Crandell scored 75 points in dual meet competition in 2005-06 and currently holds the sixth-ranking time on the program's 200 fly top-10 list, which he set at the 2006 league meet.
Coming off a stellar freshman campaign that saw him collect 63 dual meet points for the Bison, Hanes will look to further etch his way into the Bucknell record books after setting a top-10 mark in the 200 back at the Patriot League Championships last season.
Peterman is a part of three teams that currently hold program top-10 times on the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay lists, including the 200 medley relay that captured silver at the 2006 league meet with the second-fastest time in Bison history.
Bennett swam a leg on the second-place 200 medley relay, as well, and ranks seventh in the top-10 for the 100 breast. Leriotis broke into the top-10 with a personal best in the 400 IM to take eight in the event at the Patriot League Championships.
The Bucknell men also return two 2005-06 All-Patriot League second team performers, both earning honors for points scored at the league meet. Sophomore Mark Kawczenzski (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) tallied 38 points and junior Joseph Metcalf (Knoxville, Tenn./Phillips Exeter Academy) totaled 32 at the PL Championships.
The Bison will open the 2006-07 season against league foe Holy Cross on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Worcester, Mass., at 1 p.m.
