ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Bucknell women's soccer team clinched its share of the Patriot League regular season title on Sunday as the squad handed 14th-ranked Navy its first loss of the season by a 2-1 margin. With the victory, the Bison matched a program record for wins in a season with their 12th and moved to 12-4-1 overall, 6-1-0 in the league. The setback ended the Midshipmen's 19-game winning streak, leaving them at 19-1-0 on the year and 6-1-0 in Patriot League play.
Navy struck first as Meggie Curran dribbled to the middle of the field and lofted a shot from the top of the box over the head of senior goalkeeper Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) to put the Mids in front, 1-0 in the sixth minute.
However, just before the intermission, the Bison were able to net the equalizer as sophomore Nicole Marotta (Bridgewater, N.J./Mount St. Mary Academy) headed in a corner kick taken by freshman Chelsea Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla./Palm Harbor University High School) at 42:14. The goal was the first allowed by Navy since, Sept. 22, in a 4-1 win over Albany.
Then in the 69th minute, Brinkman once again set up Bucknell for a score as her free kick found sophomore Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) in front, who touched the ball to junior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) for her ninth goal of the season and fifth game-winner.
Navy outshot the Orange and Blue, 19-11, and led in corner kicks, 7-3. Lizzie Barnes made five saves for the Mids, while Dry turned aside three shots for the Bison. Fouls were 13-10 against Bucknell.
The Bison will play host to the Patriot League Tournament next Friday and Sunday, Nov. 3 and 5, and will face No. 4-seed Colgate on Friday at 7:15 p.m., while No. 2 Navy will take on No. 3 Lehigh in the other semifinal match, which is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start on Friday.
