COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 7 Maryland scored three goals within the first 11 minutes of play and held on for a 4-1 victory over Bucknell in men's soccer action Tuesday night in front of 1,010 fans at Ludwig Field. Anthony Ferraro (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) netted the only goal for the Bison. Omar Gonzalez paced the Terrapins with one goal and one assist.
Maryland, which improved to 13-3-1 on the season, set the tone in the opening minutes of the match as it took just 1:53 to tally its first goal when Spencer Allen sent a shot from 25 yards out into the right side of the net.
Just over six minutes later Jeremy Hall headed in a goal off a cross from Gonzalez, who knocked in his goal in the 11th minute off a rebound.
Bucknell's defense, which was led by Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) and his nine saves in goal, proceeded to hold Maryland without a goal the rest of the half despite a total of 13 first-half shots from the Terrapins.
Ferraro put Bucknell on the board at the 59:12 mark. Following a corner kick, Patrick Selwood (Darnestown, Md./The Heights School) flicked the ball to Ferraro who put it in the net past Maryland goalkeeper Chris Seitz, who entered the game with a goals-against average of 0.68 and eight shutouts to his credit. Ferraro now has two goals on the season and three in his career.
The Terrapins extended the lead back to three goals just 1:29 later when Pat Wilson headed in his first goal of the season to round out the scoring.
"It was a good learning experience for our team," commented Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "We were a little shell-shocked after the first 15 minutes, but we battled hard. Everybody got a chance to play in a hostile environment and we were able to score a goal against another one of the better goalies in the nation."
The loss was the third consecutive for Bucknell, which fell to 7-7-4 on the season with just one match remaining. The Bison, who were outshot 25-3 in the match, were just the third unranked opponent to score a goal against Maryland this year.
Tuesday night's game featured a matchup of brothers. Bison freshman midfielder Sean King's (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) brother, Stephen King, is the second-leading scorer on the Terrapins and is a junior
The victory for the Terrapins was the 200th in head coach Sasho Cirovski's 14 years at the helm of the team.
Three years ago Bucknell upset then-No. 2 Maryland, 1-0, for the biggest win in program history.
The Bison will return to Patriot League play Saturday as they wrap up their regular season against Navy. After a one-year hiatus Bucknell is still in the running to return to the Patriot League Tournament. If the Bison win and American loses to or ties Army or Colgate loses to Holy Cross then Bucknell will earn a postseason berth. A 2-2 tie against Navy in last year's season finale kept the Bison from last fall's Patriot League Tournament. Prior to Saturday's contest, which will kick off at 4 p.m. on Varsity Soccer Field, Bucknell will honor its lone senior, Andrew Loia (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), with Senior Day festivities.
