LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman quarterback Marcello Trigg (Tampa, Fla./Robinson) was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday after compiling 159 total yards in Saturday's 38-7 loss at Lehigh. Trigg earned the honor for the second week in a row, and Bucknell has now claimed the rookie of the week six times in eight weeks this season.
Against Lehigh, Trigg ran for a career-high 91 yards out of Bucknell's spread option offense. Included in that total was a career-long 46-yard run in the second half. He also completed 5 of 12 passes for 68 yards, including his second career touchdown pass, a 22-yard strike to Richard Simpson with five seconds left in the first half.
Trigg entered the season as Bucknell's No. 3 quarterback, but has started the last three games due to injuries to the team's top two signal callers, Andrew Lair and Terrance Wilson. On the season he has rushed for 135 yards on 32 carries and completed 23 of 51 passes for 311 yards.
Bucknell has relied on a number of freshmen this season. Six rookies are currently starting - three on offense and three on defense - and 13 freshmen appear on the two-deep this week. Previously, RB Rashod Bumpers won rookie of the week honors for his 126-yard rushing effort against Duquesne in the season opener; Brigham Farrand was honored after finishing with 11 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery in his first career start against Cornell; Sam Nana-Sinkam won after posting 11 tackles in a loss to No. 7 Richmond; and A.J. Kizekai was cited for his two-touchdown performance against Marist.
Saturday's loss dropped the Bison to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League. Bucknell hosts Fordham in another conference tilt this Saturday at 1 p.m.
