LEWISBURG, Pa. - With two second half goals, senior Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) helped the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon on Varsity Soccer Field. The win moved the Bison to 11-4-1, 5-1 in the Patriot League and 6-0 at home, marking the first time in program history that Bucknell has finished its home regular season schedule undefeated. Following the loss, the Crusaders sit at 4-13-2, 1-4-1 in Patriot League play.
Holy Cross managed to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the second minute when Casey Boland lofted a shot over the head of Bison senior netminder Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) after receiving a pass from Alison Peters.
Junior Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) responded for the Orange and Blue, 10:30 into the contest, as she headed in a cross from freshman Chelsea McGorry (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) for her team-leading eighth goal of the year.
The squads remained in a 1-1 deadlock until Margolis broke through the Crusaders' defense and connected with a feed from sophomore Jennifer Dervarics (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and freshman Chelsea Brinkman (Clearwater, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS), which she drove into the back of the net at 77:10. Margolis added her second tally of the contest in the 82nd minute, for her seventh of the season.
Jessica Stone played the first half for Holy Cross, allowed one goal and made four saves. Jessica Pietrowicz relieved her and let up two goals and turned aside five shots in the remaining 45 minutes. Dry played the entire match for Bucknell and totaled three saves.
The Bison outshot the Crusaders 23-11, including a 14-7 margin in the second half. Bucknell led in corner kicks as well, 8-2. Fouls were even at six apiece.
Next Sunday, the Orange and Blue will travel to Annapolis, Md., where the team will take on Navy in the final match of the regular season for both squads, beginning at 1 p.m. The winner of the contest will earn the right to host the Patriot League Tournament.
