LEWISBURG, Pa. - Jennifer Margolis (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan) netted her fifth goal of the season minutes into the second half and Katie Dry (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) posted her fifth shutout of the season to help Bucknell clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth with a 1-0 victory over Army Friday night at Varsity Soccer Field.
The Bison victory, which was their ninth in 10 matches, coupled with Colgate's 2-1 win against Holy Cross Friday night, secured a spot in the top four in the final Patriot League standings for Bucknell for the second consecutive season.
After an evenly played first half, Margolis put the Bison on top just over five minutes into the second half. She took a pass from Krista Lee Gentile (North Haledon, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) right in front of the goal and bounced it past the Black Knights' goalkeeper, Rebecca Garcia. With her goal, Margolis moved into a tie for fourth place with Katie McElligott on Bucknell's career goals list with 26, one ahead of Gentile.
Neither team was able to score again as the Bison wore down Army, which has not won since Sept. 15 and fell to 4-10-2 overall and 0-3-2 in Patriot League play. Bucknell improved to 10-4-1 overall and is now 4-1-0 in league play. The four league wins equal the second most in the history of the program.
Dry was called on to make just two saves to record her fifth shutout of the season. She now has 67 stops this year, just seven shy of her career high. The five shutouts the Bison defense has posted this season equals the program record that had been accomplished five other times.
Garcia stopped five shots for Army as six of Bucknell's eight shots in the contest were on goal. The Black Knights attempted seven shots. The Bison won the corner kick battle, 7-4, including 5-2 after halftime.
Bucknell wraps up its home schedule Sunday, Oct. 22, when it hosts Holy Cross. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m. at Varsity Soccer Field.
