LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell women's soccer sophomore Renee Bernardo (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley) was named BRINE Defensive Player of the Week, the Patriot League office announced on Monday. The award marks the second time this season Bernardo has been honored. Her teammate, senior Shannon Curd (Westtown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) also received weekly recognition as she earned a spot on the Patriot League's honorable mention list.
In the 30th minute of Bucknell's 2-1 victory over Colgate last Saturday, Bernardo netted her first collegiate goal off a feed from Curd, the first goal for the Bison against the Raiders since 2001.
As a key member of Bucknell's defense, Bernardo helped hold Colgate to just seven shots in the contest, only three on target, as the Orange and Blue picked up their third victory all-time over the Raiders and their first in five years.
Curd scored the game-winning tally in the 84th minute, which extended the Bison's current streak of victories to a program record-matching five games. Bucknell will be looking to break that all-time mark on Tuesday, Oct. 3, when the squad will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to take on Cornell in a 7 p.m. match.
