UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Nathan LaGrave (Okinawa, Japan/Kadena) netted a goal in the 34th minute and Bucknell took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Penn State scored three second half goals to defeat the Bison 3-1 in a soggy men's soccer match Tuesday evening.
Corey Curnutte (Waterford, Mich./Detroit Country Day) flicked the ball to LaGrave, who headed the ball to the far post as the ball snuck past the goal line to end Bucknell's 432 minute, 27 second scoreless streak that spanned five matches.
LaGrave's goal was his fifth of the season as he tied Alex Russo (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) for the team lead.
The Bison took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but Penn State scored all three of its goals in the final 35 minutes of play. David Gray tied the score in the 56th minute, while Geordie MacNeill netted the game-winner in the 74th minute.
Simon Omekanda tallied his fourth goal of the year with 8:25 remaining to provide an insurance tally and give the Nittany Lions their final two-goal margin.
Penn State attempted 22 shots to Bucknell's four, including a 14-1 advantage in the second half. The Nittany Lions also won the corner kick battle over the Bison 9-4, including 7-4 after intermission.
Joey Kuterbach (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) recorded seven saves, his second-highest figure of the season. He now has 71 stops this year. His counterpart, Conrad Taylor, registered a pair of saves.
With the loss, Bucknell, which is 0-2-4 since seeing its eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end, fell to 7-5-4 this year. Penn State, which has played one of the nation's most difficult schedules, improved to 5-8-2.
