GLEN ALLEN, Va. - In its final competitive round of the 2006 fall season, the Bucknell women's golf team successfully battled a cold, driving rain and moved up from seventh place to third at the Spider Invitational, hosted by Richmond at Virginia Crossings GC. Junior Amy Loughney (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) carded her second straight 79 and finished in a tie for fourth place individually, her third top-10 finish of the fall and second in less than a week.
On a day when scores skyrocketed due to the lousy weather conditions, Bucknell not only persevered but slashed 11 strokes off its first-round score, the biggest improvement in the field. Led by Loughney's 79, the Bison shot 323 on Tuesday, the third-best tally in the field. Campbell came from behind to win the team title by six shots over Virginia.
Bucknell passed Richmond, High Point, Marshall and Boston College to finish third in a 12-team field.
Over the weekend Loughney was runner-up at the Rutgers Invitational, and she continued her solid play at Richmond. She was one of only 11 players to break 80 in the first round and one of only nine to do so in round two. Her 158 total was seven shots behind winner Belen Diaz Cisneros of Campbell, who shot 74 on Tuesday to win by three shots over Virginia's Kristin Simpson. First-round leader AnnMarie Dalton of High Point shot 89 in the final round and slipped to 14th place.
Also for Bucknell on Tuesday, Deirdre Moran (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) shot 80 and Emily Chiodo (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) finished with an 81, and both placed in the top 20. Chiodo tied for 15th, while Moran tied for 18th.
Teri Schlang (Albany, N.Y./Stratton Mountain School) rebounded from a tough first round to shoot 83, while Kathryn Batchelor (Trenton, N.J./Princeton Country Day) finished up with an 88.
Bucknell completed what would certainly have to be considered the best fall season in the nine-year history of the program. The Bison claimed their first-ever tournament title at the Bison Fall Classic earlier this month, and since then they finished second by one shot at Rutgers and third at Richmond. Bucknell also had an outstanding showing at the Nittany Lion Invitational in September, tying the program record with a second-round 314 en route to a best-ever sixth-place finish in a very strong field.
