LEWISBURG, Pa. - On the heels of Bucknell's 17-7 Patriot League victory over Georgetown, senior linebacker Dorian Petersen (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) earned a pair of weekly honors and freshman quarterback Marcello Trigg (Tampa, Fla./Robinson) became the fifth different Bison this season to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Week accolades on Monday.
Petersen led a magnificent defensive effort in Saturday's victory in Washington, D.C., and for his efforts was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and the Damon's Bison Athlete of the Week. The Bison held Georgetown 269 total yards (84 coming on the final drive of the day inside two minutes to play) and did not allow a point until there were 27 seconds left in the game. Petersen finished with a game-high 13 tackles and had a hand in two of the three turnovers forced by the Bucknell defense.
He recovered a fumble near midfield in the first half that led directly to a Bison touchdown and a 10-0 lead. Then in the fourth quarter, with the score still 10-0 and Georgetown driving into Bucknell territory, Petersen knocked the ball out of the hands of quarterback Matt Bassuener. Teammate Brigham Farrand recovered, and the Bison also converted that takeaway into seven points and an insurmountable 17-0 lead.
Petersen leads the team and ranks fifth in the Patriot League with 65 tackles on the season. He was also named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18 after Bucknell's 20-5 win over Cornell.
On the other side of the ball, Trigg marshaled an efficient offensive attack. A freshman making only his second collegiate start, Trigg completed 8 of 20 passes for 118 yards, and five of his eight completions moved the chains on third-down plays. He also rushed for 30 yards, and perhaps most important, led an offense that did not commit a turnover for the third straight game.
This was the seventh week of Patriot League honors, and the fifth time Bucknell has claimed the PL Rookie of the Week. More amazingly, five different Bison rookies - Trigg, RB Rashod Bumpers, LB Sam Nana-Sinkam, DB Brigham Farrand and RB A.J. Kizekai - have been honored.
Bucknell is now 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Patriot League. The Bison visit Lehigh on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Goodman Stadium.
