ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Bucknell used a game-opening 14-0 run to catapult it to an 88-51 victory over Navy in its Patriot League women's basketball opener Saturday evening at Alumni Hall. Amanda Brown (Richardson, Texas/L.V. Berkner) led three Bison in double figures with 21 points as the Bison won by the third-largest margin in program history.
After the game-opening 14-point lead, Bucknell (7-6, 1-0 PL) never led by less than 10 points the rest of the way and built a 32-12 advantage with 4:25 left in the first half. The largest lead of the game was the 37-pont final margin.
Navy made just 7 of 33 field goals in the first half and turned the ball over 10 times. Bucknell, which made four of its first seven field goals, ended the half making 14 of 30. Kesha Champion (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) had 13 points in the first half and Lauren Schober (Chicago, Ill./Regina Dominican) added 10. The Bison took a 36-21 lead into intermission with Champion scoring 13 of her 15 points in the first half.
Bucknell opened the second half on a 12-4 run over the first three minutes of the second half to build a 23-point cushion as it coasted to the 88-51 win.
Brown scored 19 of her game-high 21 points in the second half. Champion added 15 points and Schober tallied 13. Jacquie Seawright (Olton, Texas/Olton) and Hope Foster (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) scored nine points apiece for the Bison who scored their most points in a regulation game since a 90-66 victory over Iona last January.
Foster and Champion each grabbed six rebounds to pace Bucknell, which outrebounded its first opponent since Dec. 3 against High Point with a 40-39 edge on the boards over the Mids.
Bucknell shot a season-high 53.3 percent, including 60.0 percent in the second half. Brown, who added four rebounds and six assists to go along with her 21 points, made 6 of 8 from the field, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range. Champion was 6-for-10 and tallied five assists. Foster blocked four shots to bring her to within eight of the Bucknell career mark.
Lindsey Hollobaugh (Loganton, Pa./Central Mountain), playing her third game since returning from a knee injury, made her first field goal sice her return and scored seven points to go along with five rebounds.
Navy (7-7, 0-1 PL), which shot just 29.5 percent from the floor, was led by Lauren Skrel who tallied nine points on 3 of 5 shooting. Four different Mids hauled in four rebounds apiece.
Bucknell, which won its fourth straight home game, and fifth in a row away from Sojka Pavilion, will continue its road trip at American Tuesday. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
