Bucknell Track and Field Completes Competition at Gulden Relays

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Both of Bucknell's men's and women's track and field teams completed competition this evening at the Gulden Relays held in Gerhard Fieldhouse, in Lewisburg, Pa. Junior Marjorie Grap (Van Etten, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten) was named the meet's Most Valuable Female Athlete in Field Events for the second consecutive year.
Grap secured two victories on the day, one in the shot put with a distance of 42 feet, 5 1/4 inches, and in the weight throw with a heave of 57-10 1/2.
Junior Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) once again finished first in the pole vault with a leap of 12-7 1/2, while sophomore Nicole Ayala (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) finished first in the triple jump, with a personal best jump of 37-8 3/4, placing her sixth in the Bucknell record books. Sophomore Denise Manero (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) also etched her way into the record books with a second-place, personal best triple jump of 37 1/4, placing her as the ninth-best Bison.
Senior Kayla Halloran (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) won the mile run with a personal record time of 5:11.75, while sophomore Christy Totten (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) also excelled in the distance category, by winning the 5000-meter run and shattering her personal best time with a finish of 18:35.62. Freshman Kim Hassett (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) finished second in the 5000 (19:05.77), while senior Jen O'Connor (Langhorne, Pa./Nazareth Acad.) and freshman Nicole Falcaro (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) finished third and fourth, with times of 19:13.92 and 19:15.46, respectively.
Freshman Kati Dempsey (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) finished tied for third in the high jump (5-4 1/4), while junior Christa Sawko (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) finished second in the 500 (1:17.12).
The Bison picked up three relay victories in the sprint medley relay (4:14.18), the 4x800 (9:31.69) and the distance medley relay (12:30.59).
"Our women were very dominant with many wins," said Bucknell head coach Kevin Donner. "We are obviously excited about the rest of the year."
The 4x55 shuttle-hurdles relay team from Mount St. Mary's set a new Gerhard Fieldhouse record with a time of 32.54.
On the men's side, the Bison's 4x800 relay team picked up Bucknell's lone victory of the day with a time of 7:57.85, while the Orange and Blue earned second-place victories in the sprint medley relay (3:35.41), distance medley relay (10:33.77), the shuttle hurdles relay (35.85) and the 4x400 (3:24.37).
Freshman Ryan Robinson (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6-4, while sophomore Michael Gibney (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) finished second in the 5000.
Junior Matt Forys (Howell, N.J./Howell) finished second in the 3000 with a personal best time of 8:37.35, followed by seniors K.C. Brown (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) in third (8:38.24) and Kevin Fortkiewicz (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) in fourth (8:39.14).
In the mile run, junior Eric Harbison (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg C.C) finished third (4:34.78), while freshman Donald Sanner (Meyersdale, Pa./Meyersdale) finished fourth (4:36.29).
In the weight throw, junior Tyler Hoffman (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) finished third with a heave of 54-4, while senior Dan Frake (Northport, N.Y./Northport) finished in a tie for fourth in the shot put with a throw of 46-4 3/4.
"This was a fantastic meet for the men," said Donner. "Because of the layover from the holiday break, our technical events were a little stale, however it is obvious our men trained hard over the break and competed very well. We were second in four of the five relays and were victorious in the 4x800. I was very pleased with everyone."
The Bison will return to action on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the Black Squirrel Invitational in Kent, Ohio.
